Who Am I -- Overview
I have always loved creating images and have
been a photographer all my life. I believe my photographs must communicate
something. It may be a message, it may be an emotion, or both. If I
don't "get" the message, or if I don't feel something, I wonder why I am looking
at the image. In all of my images I am aiming to tell a story,
though I don't always reach that lofty goal. Rarely is my work abstract.
Though, I can be intrigued by the pattern and color in a situation, you, the
viewer will nearly always know what you are seeing in my pictures.
I have chosen not to limit the view in front of my lens. Too many things
interest me. I enjoy getting up early in the morning. This has added
immensely to my photographs. I have been able to catch a magnificent white
heron taking off with the morning sun shining through his wings, a lone street
sweeper in Venice's San Marco Piazza, and the moon reflected off of Sedona's
beautiful red rocks.
My goal is to photograph the
world around me and produce pictures that people enjoy and want to buy. My
personal struggle is to find new and innovative ways to help people see what they have
already seen. The beauty of my photographs comes from that creativity, not
from the unpredictability of the subject. This philosophy means I spend a
lot of time on the roads, highways, and trails that many people visit.
That's why I call myself a roadside photographer. (More about that in a
link below.)
At this stage of my
life I find myself wanting to give back to the community with my
photography. My work takes me all over the state of Arizona providing
photographs for non-profit (501(c)3) and governmental agencies. My recent work has been
for the Oasis Sanctuary
Foundation, a parrot rescue near Benson Arizona, Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona,
and governmental agencies.
Further, the profits from
the sale of my photographs go to support the Oasis Sanctuary Foundation. (For
more information about the Oasis go
here.)
Over the years I have developed various philosophical perspective about my own
photography and the photography of others. These are included in other
links.
